Karyological characters of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae)

چکیده
The paper provides a short review of blackfly cytogenetics. The most important characters of blackfly karyotypes, such as centromeres, puffs, Balbiani rings, nucleoli, sex-chromosome determining systems and B-chromosomes are considered. Interchromosomal homozygous translocations and a tandem fusion of polytene chromosomes are described. Evolutionary trends in karyotypic changes are discussed.

Vertebrate host specificity of wild-caught blackflies revealed by mitochondrial DNA in blood.
Blood-feeding blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) transmit pathogens, harass vertebrate hosts and may cause lethal injuries in attacked victims, but with traditional methods it has proved difficult to identify their hosts. By matching mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences in blood collected from engorged blackflies with stored sequences in the GenBank database, relationships between 17 blackfly spec...
متن کاملA new species of Hellichiella (Diptera: Simuliidae) from the Eocene
We synonymize Hellichiella pugach Perkovsky & sukhomlin, 2015 with Gre niera yankovskyi Perkovsky & sukhomlin, 2015 (stegopterniini) based on the holotype and female paratype of H. pugach (stegopterniini). Hellichiella po lessica n. sp. differs from Hellichiella oligocenica (rubtsov, 1936) (the only species of Hellichiella known in Baltic amber) by its smaller body, narrower head, 11-segmente...
متن کاملReview of blackfly (Diptera: Simuliidae) control in South Africa.
The medical, veterinary and economic importance of blackflies in South Africa, and the historical development of blackfly control programmes in various South African rivers, are reviewed in this paper. In 1996 it was estimated that blackflies can cause more than R 88 million damages per annum along the middle and lower Orange River where Simulium chutteri is considered the main pest species. A ...
متن کاملA method for the assessment of blackfly (Diptera: Simuliidae) attraction to and engorgement on sheep in South Africa.
A suspended-net technique was used to capture blackflies attracted to and engorging on Dorper and Merino sheep on irrigated pastures. Two bait animals of each breed were restrained individually in wire-mesh enclosures located within four larger pens, each containing nine more animals of the same breed. Nets were suspended partly over the restrained animals and blackflies were collected at the e...
متن کاملA rapid method of estimating the abundance of immature blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae).
A ten-point visual method of estimating the abundance of immature blackflies in the field is proposed and tested. The method is based on the comparison of larvae and pupae found on natural substrates, with ten diagrammatically prepared abundance classes. When estimates were based on the abundance of blackflies within a 4 x 4 cm area of highest density, there were no significant differences betw...
